So, I got a box of these the other day.
It’s more exciting, in some ways, then actually holding the finished copy of the book in your hand. An Advanced Read Copy (ARC), is the first bound, copyedited version of the book you’ve labored for the past year to bring to life. Holding it, flipping through actual pages, experiencing a thing with weight and substance and smell (I can always tell my people because they love the musty smell of paper), knowing that everything is locked in and THIS is the version that people will get to read . . . well, it’s sublime. It’s the moment you turn to your girlfriend and say, “Honey! I made a book!” And then you enjoy it for about 30 seconds and go sit down at your computer.
Because it’s time to start on the next one.
So, yeah. It’s an amazing experience, and I’d like to share it with you. I’m setting aside 3 signed ARCs of JAVELIN RAIN for fans of my work. Here’s how you win:
Anyone who follows me on social media can’t miss that I’m something of a wargamer. I do ancients miniatures wargaming, and you can see some of my geeking out here and here. Like most wargamers, I am obsessed with the serried ranks of miniature armies. I bet some of you are too. And JAVELIN RAIN is nothing if not a book about war. So, to win a JAVELIN RAIN ARC, show me your army:
- Tweet a picture of your army at me (@mykecole), email it to me at myke (at) mykecole (dot) com, or post it in the comments section of this blog post.
- Armies can be for any game, and can be miniatures, blocks or counters.
- If you’re not a wargamer, but still want to enter, I’ll accept armies of stuffed animals, marshmallow peeps, trained ants, just about anything you can get to form up.
I’ll give prizes for most cool (formed army for a wargame, or a otherwise traditional muster of troops), most ridiculous/funny and overall most awesome/endearing.
Contest runs globally. I’ll ship your ARC anywhere in the world. Contest ends January 31st, 2016. Enter as many times as you like.
So, get at me! Really looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Looking forward to great things in 2016.
