GEMINI CELL Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) Giveaway Contest!

By December 1, 2014Comms

Hey all,

Those of you who follow me on social media are well aware that my 4th novel, GEMINI CELL, will be published by Ace/Roc (Penguin Random House) on January 27th, 2015.

I’m really excited about this one. It’s my most ambitious work to date, with strong romance elements, blistering action, and what I hope you’ll agree is a new spin on zombie fiction.

GEMINI CELL is set in the SHADOW OPS universe, but takes place many years before the first novel in the trilogy, CONTROL POINT. The goal here is to give readers a book that they can really get into without having read any of my other books. GEMINI CELL stands completely alone, but there is enough of the familiar to appeal to fans of the original series.

But it is new ground, and that means a new military unit with new magic, and that’s where you come in.

The appendix to BREACH ZONE contains the school insignia for each of the magic schools identified by the US military. These symbols are worn as lapel pins by qualified Sorcerers, or as chest badges by Private Military Contractors (PMCs).

GEMINI CELL introduces a new school of magic, one for which there’s no pin: Summoning.

Here’s a brief description (don’t worry, this isn’t telling you anything you don’t already know from the back cover copy. I am going to be deliberately vague here): Summoners are able to raise the dead by calling another spirit from beyond the grave. If done just after death, this spirit can be paired with the soul of the newly slain, trapping two consciousnesses in the same corpse. The two souls work together to control the shared body, but they are always in conflict, each seeking to dominate the other. The pairing grants the corpse incredible powers, which you will learn more about when you read the book.

The Gemini Cell is the seed from which the Supernatural Operations Corps (SOC) will later grow. It’s a highly secret organization hidden within the US government. It’s existence is only known to a few, and it operates in total secret, as opposed to the SOC which is a public institution.

I’d like you to provide me with one of two things, or both:

– The insignia for the Summoning School.

– The coat of arms/logo for the Gemini Cell.

You can provide me with one or both, or multiple ideas for all. Enter as many times as you want. I will chose the top three *contestants* (all entries you submitted taken as an aggregate) and reward the winners with a rare signed Advanced Read Copy (ARC – Uncorrected Proofs).

GC_ARCThis contest is open *globally.* I will ship the ARCs to the winners anywhere in the world.

Enter however you like: photoshop, digital images of hand-drawings, whatever it takes. Email entries to me at myke (at) mykecole (dot) com, or post them in the comments section of this thread.

I’ll pick winners on January 3rd. You’ve done some amazing stuff in the past, and I’m really excited to have fans of the universe put their stamp on this newest entry. Have at it!

Hey Myke, thanks for the contest. Looking forward to reading it!

However, I’m a little confused about the description you provided about the summoners’ abilities. Apologies if these questions might open it up to spoilers, just trying to get my head around how it works. 🙂

You state that ‘If done just after death, this spirit can be paired with the soul of the newly slain, trapping two consciousness in the same corpse.’ What happens to the first spirit that is summoned though? Is it in a kind of limbo while the summoner seeks another corpse to pair it with? Not sure if I read that part right… (e.g. my understanding of it is that, say if the summoner kills guy 1, does he then summon his spirit and then kills guy 2 straight after?)

Does it always require two spirits in the same corpse?

So the corpse has incredible powers – How then does the summoner control the corpse? Is there a risk that if he summons a guy he just killed that the resurrected spirit will want to take revenge and his new handler? I guess the summoner has a killswitch in case that occurs?

    Hope that makes sense.

I don’t want to give too many details, but I will say this – the Summoner can communicate with the corpse, but he/she does not control it. This is not Necromancy from the SHADOW OPS novels. The two souls Bound into the corpse control it. Hope that helps!
