Tell me what my books are about, win a copy of JAVELIN RAIN!

Hey all,

Those of you who follow me on social media know that last night I received a box of shiny, new copies of JAVELIN RAIN.

Ain't they beautiful?

Ain’t they beautiful?

It’s hard to believe I’m about to publish my 5th novel. 5 years ago, I was still working in Washington, DC, with a long career in intelligence reeling out into the distance. I’d long since soured on the work and dreamed of living in Brooklyn and being a writer, but figured it would never happen. How could it? I’d been throwing myself against the same wall for 15 years. I had no reason to believe that I was about to break through. But I was, and I did, and now I am doing exactly everything I said I’d do. I’m writing this blog post in my Brooklyn apartment, less than two weeks away from the release of my 5th book. I’ve shaken hands with George R. R. Martin. I got to have lunch with China Mieville and tell him how much his work meant to me. I have gotten drunk with Joe Abercrombie probably more times than I should have. I have stood up in front of packed halls at Comic Cons on both coasts and waved my geek flag for all to see.

It makes me think of odds, and how they really don’t amount to a hill of beans in terms of the actions you have to take. Some fights seem impossible, but the truth is that they aren’t, and while the possibility, even the probability, of failure always exists, it doesn’t change what you have to DO. Will you get where you want to go? Maybe not, but there’s only one way to find out. I quote Alan Bookbinder (my personal favorite of all the characters I’ve written), “Sometimes, you win.”

And of course, I owe it all to you. Readers make it possible for me to live my dream. There is no way I can possibly capture how much I owe you in a blog post, so I’ll just say thanks, and give away some books.

I’m always fascinated by the takeaways my readers have, how everyone experiences my writing differently. I’ve had readers assume I am conservative, or liberal, or pro-military, or anti-military, or bitter, or joyful, or crazy or sober or all kinds of different things and all from reading the sameĀ text. No two people read a book the same way, and there’s no wrong way to read one, and that gave me an idea.

I’m giving away three signed copies of JAVELIN RAIN. To win, email me at myke (at) mykecole (dot) com and tell me what my books areĀ about. You can pick any book and you can tell me as much as you want. Write a book of your own, send me a single sentence. You can be funny and irreverent. You can be serious or ridiculous. You can regurgitate the plot, you can perform an in-depth piece of literary criticism. You can speculate on character motivations, accuse me of Nihilism or tell me that FOB Frontier is a metaphor for America’s consumption of processed food. The sky’s the limit!

I’ll post the three winners in a blog post (unless you don’t want me to), and send you a signed copy of JAVELIN RAIN anywhere in the world.

Looking forward to seeing your interpretations, and grateful to you for thinking about my books at all.

It’s been such a wild ride. Looking forward to more.
