Why I now have a beard

By | Comms | 18 Comments

A short while ago, I “dropped my RCC.” RCC stands for Request Change of Component, and “dropped” means, “filed the paperwork.” This initiates a transfer of my status from Select Reserve (SELRES – those reservists who are drilling on the weekends, doing a minimum of two weeks active duty time a year, and are ready to mobilize for any contingency) to the Individual Ready Reserve or IRR, an unpaid, non-drilling force that maintains a modicum of military readiness, but who generally aren’t called up except in the event of an existential crisis (i.e. invasion of the homeland). The SELRES are uniformed warfighters. So are the IRR, technically, but the truth is that we’re more of a territorial militia, a pool of experienced military veterans who will be dipped into only in the time of greatest need. IRR reservists still do a couple of weeks of unpaid service a year, mostly through correspondence courses. We do administrative work to help keep…

Guest Post: Leanna Renee Hieber’s Top Ten Fashion Ideas for Writers

Hey all,  I just got the outline on my new tattoo done today. It was on the inside of my bicep, up into my armpit and over the inside of my elbow. For those of you who’ve been tattooed, you will understand that those are particularly sensitive parts of the body. It knocked the stuffing out of me, so I figure tonight’s a good night to take a back seat and let someone else drive.  I’ve known Leanna for years from the con scene, and as she is now both one of my sisters in the Holy Taco *and* has a book coming out, I figure now would be a good time to let her take the helm. I’m up at Boskone next weekend, and look forward to seeing some of you there! Take it away Leanna! Dear Readers of Myke Cole’s Blog. I have a ton of fun with Myke at various conventions throughout this great land, and he’s kindly…

Release Day

By | Comms | 6 Comments

Buy it at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Powell’s or Indiebound. As I write this, snow is accumulating on my hipster Brooklyn fire escape at the rate of three inches/hour. The news, in their usual fit of hysteria and hyperbole, is calling this the worst blizzard in city history. Whether or not that’s true, you can’t argue with the fact that it’s snowing like a motherfucker out there. There’s an explanation for this. You see, tomorrow is official release date of my latest novel, GEMINI CELL. I’m not a particularly smart guy. In fact, I’d go so far as to say I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer. How dull exactly? Flip that switch and turn out the lights. I’ll just sit here drooling in the dark until someone comes along and turns ‘em back on. You might think it unlikely that a guy with my particular brand of intellectual limitation would ever be a published author, and you’d be…

Imaginary Friends

By | Comms | 3 Comments

I’m off to Confusion tomorrow, with some hot-of-the-press copies of my new novel, GEMINI CELL, which just arrived in the mail today. I’ll be moderating the Dumb Questions panel Friday night at 5PM, and I’ll be giving away a copy as a prize for the dumbest question of all. Don’t fail me, folks. But for now, I’m sitting here listening to the voices of Oscar Britton, Simon Truelove, Jan Thorsson (callsign – Harlequin), and Grace Lyons, who many of you know as Scylla. I’m not listening to a single reader sounding out their lines. I’m listening to an ensemble cast of trained actors who have done the necessary study of the character, and put in the time to bring their personality out through their words. All of this is accompanied by movie quality sound-effects and a background score to set the mood. Graphic Audio has finally released their audio drama production of CONTROL POINT. The press release is here. They’ll…

The Hebdo Murders: Military Bearing vs. Macho Bullshit

By | Comms | 5 Comments

In the wake of the Charlie Hebdo murders, I’ve been getting a lot of email from my friends and colleagues. The messages are mixed, but there’s an overwhelming theme of righteous wrath, of the need to puff up and strike out to show . . . I don’t who, when you consider that the perpetrators are now all dead save one, that they can’t do this to . . . us (whoever us is). It bugs me that I might strike people as the kind of guy who would agree with that sentiment, so I wanted to do some public exploration of how I feel about this. I’ve written before about how I feel about violence, and on the consequences of killing. Both are things I take very seriously. Since I was a small boy, being a “warrior” has been a major component of my self-image. I grew up in a less enlightened age of rigorous gender policing, and for…
