Hopefully I’m not jinxing it, but I think we’re finally over the hump with relief ops post Hurricane Sandy. There is a lot of suffering still going on and a lot of work ahead of us, but I think the worst has past and we’re finally making headway.
I’ve finally reached a point where I can breathe easy enough to update the blog. And it’s a real relief because I’ve been sitting on some great news that’s been in my inbox since I first set out to Staten Island. Two things:
1.) The UK cover for the 2nd novel in the SHADOW OPS series, FORTRESS FRONTIER, has been finalized for release! It’s another Larry Rostant masterpiece, and I am absolutely thrilled with it:
I’ve been saying for a while that while Oscar Britton is a major character in this book, he’s not the *main* character. The man pictured there is Colonel Alan Bookbinder, and I hope you like him as much as I do. In a lot of ways, Bookbinder is the kind of officer I hope to be.
Once again, Headline has given me a great deal of input. Every piece of gear, from the rucksack to the uniform to the shotgun, was chosen to match the story and based on photographs of real gear I sent to the artist. I’m sure there are hard bitten operators out there who could poke holes in it, but not big holes. I love the fact that, as with CONTROL POINT, I’ve had so much creative control over the cover that I feel like I’m telling the story again through pictures.
2.) You can see it there at the bottom of the cover, but FORTRESS FRONTIER has netted a fantastic blurb from one of my favorite fantasy authors, Mark Lawrence. If you haven’t read his Broken Empire series, do yourself a favor and grab PRINCE OF THORNS right now. KING OF THORNS is even better, and I am chomping at the bit to read the forthcoming EMPEROR OF THORNS, which is coming next summer.
Mark says of FORTRESS FRONTIER: I suspect this is the best ride that military fantasy has to offer – you definitely want to get on board.
Someone on twitter (forgive me, but I can’t remember from who) recently noticed that their favorite game designer was following them and said, “it’s like a hundred birthdays at once!”
One of my favorite authors liked my book.
So, yeah. That.
FORTRESS FRONTIER debuts in just three months. I’m very proud of this book and am really looking forward to seeing what you all think of it. It’s a tense time for any author as release day approaches, but an outstanding cover and great jacket quotes go a long way toward putting those fears to rest.
