Repost: Food is Fuel

By | Comms | 2 Comments

I noticed today that the Holy Taco Church site has been taken down. This saddens me, but I also accept it as part of life on the Internet. That said, there’s a post I did on there a while ago that I really liked, and I didn’t want it to vanish from posterity. So, in order for people (and search engines) to be able to find it, I repost it here. The recipe is real, by the way. Let me know if you try it. Food is Fuel Now, you all know me. I’m against fun. You think that’s a joke. You think I am kidding. Let me assure you that I am not kidding. I am deadly serious. I am have never been more serious in my entire fucking life. You can call me a stick in the mud. You can say that I’m pooping on your cloud. “Why does Myke have to ruin everything? Why doesn’t Myke like…

Contest Winners!

By | Comms | 4 Comments

Folks are aware that I’ve recently run a contest. The challenge was for you to tell me what my books are about, and the prize was a signed copy of JAVELIN RAIN. Normally, I let these things run long, and take my time in picking winners, but I wanted to do it quickly here, as it’s just (gasp) TWO DAYS until the book releases. Seriously, folks. The clock just struck midnight as I was writing this. I was SO gratified by the huge number of responses I got. A lot of you took a lot of time to think deeply about what my books meant, and that kind of feedback is the most affirming thing any artist can experience. This is my favorite contest so far, by far. It was nigh impossible to pick winners, but I don’t have unlimited copies to give away, so here they are (in no particular order). – Cheryl, who says: “Well, despite the fantasy garb,…

Here’s how to help my writing career

By | Comms | 4 Comments

So, JAVELIN RAIN, my 5th published novel, comes out in exactly one week. It’s a time of celebration for me, because this is five more novels than I ever thought I would get published, but it’s also a time of serious anxiety, and that’s what I want to talk about here. People are always asking me how best to support my writing career. Should they buy the book in print or digital format? From Amazon or B&N or Powell’s or some smaller indie bookstore? Should they preorder or not? These kind of questions are *greatly* appreciated, because they show that you care not only about my writing, but about *me*, and that you are invested in my long-term success. It makes me feel like you’re not only fans, you’re friends, and when you grew up a friendless nerd, that’s one hell of a thing to feel. I’ve struggled to embrace the Patreon economy. I understand that it’s a legitimate way to…

Tell me what my books are about, win a copy of JAVELIN RAIN!

By | Comms | One Comment

Hey all, Those of you who follow me on social media know that last night I received a box of shiny, new copies of JAVELIN RAIN. It’s hard to believe I’m about to publish my 5th novel. 5 years ago, I was still working in Washington, DC, with a long career in intelligence reeling out into the distance. I’d long since soured on the work and dreamed of living in Brooklyn and being a writer, but figured it would never happen. How could it? I’d been throwing myself against the same wall for 15 years. I had no reason to believe that I was about to break through. But I was, and I did, and now I am doing exactly everything I said I’d do. I’m writing this blog post in my Brooklyn apartment, less than two weeks away from the release of my 5th book. I’ve shaken hands with George R. R. Martin. I got to have lunch with…

Unintended consequences

By | Comms | 2 Comments

Yesterday, writer Blair MacGregor posted a really detailed and thoughtful analysis of one of my fight scenes. It’s incredibly gratifying to inspire this level of consideration. I’ve said many times before that I am no Emily Dickinson. I write to be read, to send a signal out and get a signal back. But there was something else in MacGregor’s piece that really struck me. She’s incredibly complimentary, and I hope it won’t be considered egoboo if I accept the praise. I think the things she says are working, do work, and they work for the reasons she says they do. There’s just one problem: I had no idea I was doing them. If you have time to read MacGregor’s whole piece, great. If not, take a look at this snippet: “We have Shouts.  Not Someone shouted or the stupid-clunky He heard shouting.  We have instead a single word that tells us, “At least one human is making lots of noise that others will hear,…
